Community service, as the name suggests, is the service performed by
an individual that benefits the society. It enables individuals to acquire
life skills and knowledge, while providing a service to those who need
it the most. Giving back and assisting others is the basis of community
service or volunteering.
There are many forms of such a service like donating clothes, providing
food to the poor, planting trees and helping to keep public areas clean.
It can also be offered by volunteering at local hospitals, churches, fire
stations, clinics and schools, as well as other public or private
organisations within the community.
3E Worldwide's mission is to reach out to the community and provide
programs that meet their needs. 3E has worked with more than ten
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to create lesson plans and
teach English to school students, visually impaired and hearingimpaired children, and to organize and perform activities in elderly
homes, among other things.
IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
The importance of community service is experienced in
the way it connects us to the community by improving it
and making it a better place for everyone to live in.
It gives us the chance to improve life skills, such as communication and
organisational skills, teamwork, planning, problem-solving and task
management. It broadens our horizons by helping us understand the
needs of the society that we take for granted sometimes.
Community service is a great way to make a difference in our extended
social circle and to strengthen it from within. Furthermore, it fosters an
increased sense of social responsibility. It helps individuals develop a
value of self-worth by touching other lives.
Those who help others in need engage
in a noble act that helps them in turn
too. In case of students, it is important as
it facilitates them to mold themselves as
active members of society which can
reflect their character in their college
resumes at a later date. Whereas in case
of general individuals, it gives them a
sense of direction and soul satisfaction.
Those who are benefitted from the
service, like the elderly and others, tend
to receive a new perspective of life.
HOW DOES COMMUNITY SERVICE
BUILD US UP?
Community service builds our character on
many different levels: mentally, physically, and
spiritually.
It provides a sense of purpose and self-confidence.
Community service brings out the talents and attributes of people,
allowing them to discover and develop themselves.
It also allows individuals to distress and relax their overworked minds.
Community service provides spiritual satisfaction to individuals by
contributing to the society and by helping those in need.
Volunteering can help a person progress in their career by helping
them to acquire skills such as teamwork, communication, and many
more.
Volunteering helps to hold a community together as it allows
individuals to connect, making the wor
ld a better place.
Volunteer work in the community can
help people realize that the people
they are assisting and working with are
no different from themselves. This
awareness may lead to empathy and
compassion for others. Understanding
the needs and motivations of others,
particularly those who live lives that
differ from our own, is a crucial
element of having a productive life.
This leads to a perspective of humanity that
can assist a person steer free of other people's
prejudiced ideas, leading to a more diversified
and, ultimately, more productive, and thoughtprovoking existence.
HOW DOES COMMUNITY SERVICE
EMPOWER US?
When we perform a selfless service on a small scale, it has a ripple
effect. Those who have been helped are likely to "pay it forward" and
help others. This allows the future generations to become more
socially aware and work towards the sustainability of the
environment.
Community service helps in establishing a healthy atmosphere filled
with unity, harmony and friendship. A united society will eventually
help get rid of social differences, provide relief to the poor and assist
in environmental sustainability.
