- Sreesha Ghosh and Srishti Ghosh

Students all over the world, aiming to get admission into their dream universities, want to get as much experience in the corporate world as possible in order to achieve their goals. What better insight into the real world than internships? Dr. Mauli Mahajan has taken a proactive step in this direction, by setting up a one of a kind internship program for the students of Grade 11 and 12 over the summer. In the second year of this programme, students were given the opportunity to attend internships in a variety of companies like Frost and Sullivan, Apparel Group, ABB Industries, MH Alshaya, ESRI, Prime Medical, SAE, Medeor 24X7, Sobha Group, One8one, Emirates Hospitality, ENBD, Seadrill, Nimai, Petrofac and IMG Worlds of Adventure. In 2019 more than 150 students interned at 25 firms across Dubai, gaining practical experience from retail to medicine, from software development to accounts, from hospitality to management, from journalism to marketing and from education to banking. They had the chance to simulate the professional experience and in doing so, developed an array of skills like communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and writing skills. They also learnt the significance of cooperation, acceptance of workers, supervision, being responsible & punctual, being realistic, along with much more. Listed below are a few

Company: Apparel Group

“During the summer of 2017, I decided to challenge myself and take part in Modern’s internship program. I had the pleasure of working at Tommy Hilfiger, a globally renowned clothing brand. Going in, I must admit I was nervous but the staff made me feel like I was already a part of their team. My role was that of a sales associate and everyday, I learnt something new about how a store gets managed. As customers, we rarely ever pay attention to what goes on behind the scenes but this internship opened up a window for me. I was taught the meaning of technical terms like Average Transaction Value, Unit Per Transaction and Key Performance Indicators, terms that we hear but never really understand. Since the brand was so famous, I had the opportunity to interact with all sorts of customers. This helped me develop my interpersonal skills which are essentially required for marketing and sales. I think it’s really important for students to be involved in internship programs in order to understand all the important aspects of professional life. Through this internship I was able to build a gap between the practical and theoretical world of retail."

Name: Sanjana Nair
Age: 16
Company: Prime Medical

“During the month of August, I chose to undertake an internship at Prime Medical. The internship lasted three weeks and while I got to learn about the medical world, I also enjoyed myself thoroughly. The internship was split into two sections: working at the call center, where we contacted previous patients of the Prime Clinic and ask them for feedback based on their experience, and shadowing the doctor, where we learnt about various fields of medicine and their importance. At the beginning I was placed at the reception, where I had the chance to observe the way in which the clinic documented their patients’ health reports and accessed records from previous appointments. I was also allocated to the laboratory where I saw how samples of blood and urine were used to determine the presence of any grave ailment. The last three days gave me the opportunity to shadow three departments: orthopedics, general practice and pediatrics. All in all, I would say that my experience at Prime Medical Center was a fantastic experience that allowed me to step into the shoes of a professional doctor and understand if it were a life and career I wanted to live. Name: Neeraj Samtani
Age: 17
Company: ESRI

“We hit the ground running during my ESRI internship. On the opening day itself, I learnt about the software development cycle, information systems and the difference between agile and waterflow development models. I was required to build a project that involved making plug-ins for ESRI so that ArcGIS could support PDF formats. In the second week, I started making plugins that would be made available for users to use with ArcGIS. In the third week, I switched over to coding in Python and wrote a script to automate what I had been doing until then. It would convert the source file into any other format and compare the new document to the original one. In the fourth week, I worked on optimizing the code that I had written in week 3, managing to cut down the run time from 48 hours to a minute! All in all, I gained skills and a work ethic I never would have been able to inculcate on my own, and I have enjoyed every minute of this internship. It assured me that I would indeed like to pursue computer engineering as a career.”
